Oco Armchair: A Synthesis of Aesthetic Simplicity and Function

Mauricio Coelho's Award-Winning Design Marries Form and Comfort

In the realm of furniture design, the Oco armchair emerges as a testament to the harmonious blend of simplicity and functionality, crafted by the visionary designer Mauricio Coelho. This piece not only serves its purpose but also stands as a work of art, inviting both use and admiration.

The inspiration behind the Oco armchair is rooted in the pursuit of aesthetic simplicity, a concept that Mauricio Coelho has translated into a harmonious interplay of shapes. The armchair's distinctive half-sphere shell, crafted from fiberglass, encapsulates the essence of its design philosophy: a visually striking yet pleasantly simple form that intrigues both from an aesthetic and a production standpoint. This design ethos is a reflection of Coelho's commitment to originality and the seamless integration of form and function.

What sets the Oco armchair apart is its visual strength, achieved through non-complex, yet impactful design elements. The fiberglass shell, central to the armchair's design, is versatile in its finish options, including lacquer or laminated wood, allowing for a personalized touch. The carbon steel legs, precision-cut by laser, add to the armchair's unique character with their variety of finishes. The ergonomic upholstery ensures comfort, fulfilling the armchair's primary function without compromising on style.

The realization of the Oco armchair was a journey of prototypes and refinement. A plywood mold was initially created for the fiberglass shell, followed by the development of the laser-cut steel legs. High-quality foams were selected for the upholstery, and a 12 kg metal profile was incorporated into the backrest cushion to enhance stability. The result is a product that not only meets but exceeds the expectations of stability and comfort, capable of supporting over 150 kg without tipping.

With dimensions of L880 mm x W880 mm x H720 mm, the Oco armchair is proportionately designed to serve its purpose while also provoking contemplation and desire. The loose backrest cushion offers adaptability for optimal seating comfort, while the fixed seat ensures stability. This armchair is a product of meticulous research and design, aiming to engage the user as much through its function as through its desirability.

The development of the Oco armchair, which began in May 2022 in Sarandi, Brazil, culminated in its launch in January 2023. The design process was marked by challenges, particularly in laminating the fiberglass shell with natural wood veneers and achieving a clean aesthetic connection between the shell and the legs. Despite these hurdles, the final product stands as a proud achievement for Coelho, showcasing his dedication to overcoming technical obstacles in the pursuit of design excellence.

Recognized for its exceptional design, the Oco armchair was honored with the prestigious Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2024. This accolade is a testament to Coelho's expertise and innovation, marking the Oco armchair as a top-tier design that transcends trends and embodies the authenticity of ideas. With its minimalist yet powerful aesthetic, the Oco armchair is poised to become a timeless piece in the landscape of modern furniture design.
